Baby Names For Mummies and Daddies - Things to Think About When Choosing Your Baby's Name

,
A Baby's name can be the source of huge debate and family turmoil... first you can't decide on a name, then you can but no one else likes it, but all the names they are talking about remind you of someone you once knew and you really don't want to think of them in the park every time you shout that name!

Name choosing is a serious business and shouldn't be taken on lightly, or your child could be the person who has to sign "I P Quick" at the bottom of their email! You have to consider the things that can be made up from a child's name and you shouldn't overlook other children's ingenuity when coming up with nick names, as poor little Zack Ian Thomas found out, his only saving grace being that due to his flame red hair the kids had already pegged him with a name before the true meaning of ZIT surfaced!

Unusual names are becoming a bit of a fashion these day's driven by celebrities love of the seemingly ever more random, although look back through the annuals of time and it is nothing new I bet Ingrid Bergman's daughter Pia got very tired of having to spell her name out every time someone asked for her address details... mind you I don't think a surname like Lindströmgot would have helped! But you see that is the trouble with the unusual, while it makes life just that little bit different, it also makes it that little bit harder... try the chapter on how to make a name for tips on the unusual and double barrelled first names.

Trying to be clever with common names isn't always easy either, we've all heard the Teresa Green and Robin Banks name plays and they are OK but unless you are going to be a tree surgeon or take up a life of highly fuelled bank heist's then the jokes will wear thin especially after 70 or 80 years!

Sometimes it is too late to change, my sister happily named both of her children and was, sometime after the second birth, congratulated on her Emmie and Ocsar... not by one of the family either, we didn't even see it. However, in a truly good ending to the story she is now able to refer to them collectively as her award's for a lifetime commitment to their father!

So as you can see there really is no hard and fast rules to name choosing, the one you decide on will be around for a little while and whether family and friends like it or not, will actually prove immaterial once the little bundle arrives and takes ownership of their new title, they will be yours and everyone will love them and that is all that really matters.

And do you know what? Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeon's again - You might but when the little chap arrives he just doesn't look like a Snowdrop! And you will have to break your daughter's heart when you explain to her that Snowdrop really isn't a good name for a boy... and am I ever thankful to my parents for that, a lifetime of Snowdrop would not have been fun, although people would never have forgotten me!

Instead I ended up with an exact copy of my father's name and all the joy that brings when you are applying for a driving licence, passport and bank account - and I know what you're thinking, how good would it be to have the same bank account details as your father - well let me tell you it's not as good as it sounds, the only swapped money we did have was mine paid to him!

I guess as a footnote here, I am really trying to say that although you will put your heart and soul into trying to choose your baby's name, don't let it be stressful, the name you choose will work - you could go for Pilot Inspektor or Moon Unit, it's been done! Enjoy it.
